Blog Post 4- Background Information
Some background information on what my stepfather does in the navy as a IT1. There are multiple different parts of the navy but my stepfathers is split into a couple different sections. like i said he is a IT1 which stands for information systems technician first class, his two qualifications are IW and AW which stand for information dominance warfare and air warfare. To sum those up he works on mostly everything related to communications and computers within his ship the USS Donald Cook stationed in Jacksonville Florida . The two different sides are the radio and the computer and network side, to start with the radio side he is the person that keep all communication systems up and running, an example could be the SATCOM radios, what this means is that he makes it so all other ships, aircrafts and bases can communicated no matter where in the world they are. He does more like troubleshooting radio equipments, maintaining antennas, load encryption, and set up different circuits so the captain and the operations team always has ability to communicate during different missions. Now the computer and network side, where he manages the ships entire IT infrastructure. They have multiple secure networks aboard the ship where he is responsible for things like creating accounts, managing servers, making sure routers are running, and fixing computers when they crash or break. His main job on this side of the boat is to make sure everything is running properally and how it is supposed to even when they are in the middle of the ocean. Each person is assigned an billet and he was assigned network security, he is a big part of keeping the ship safe from cyber threats, as well as moniters all the networks to make sure there is no suspious activities going on, he enforces cybersecurity rules and gets the ship prepared foe inspections and readiness checks. Overall his main jobs are to send, store, and protect all information regarding the ship.
